Provenance: Gift of the artist to James Ligon New York NY; to current owner. Painting listed in Albert Sperath's catalogue raisonné The Art of Ellis Wilson University of Kentucky Press 2000 p.74. Note: Ellis Wilson did not paint images of the racial inequalities of 1940s America; instead the artist chose to paint images of African Americans in a constructive and positive light. "Cooling Cylinders Cooling" depicts a man working the production line at a New Jersey defense plant during World War II.
